Speaking at a bell-ringing ceremony organized to promote financial literacy, Prime Minister Amarasuriya noted that the overarching curriculum reforms are designed to furnish students from Grades 6 through 9 with foundational knowledge of business and financial management. Introducing the subject to all Grade 6 learners in 2027 represents the first phase of this nationwide educational shift.

Key Developments

  • Phased Curriculum Reform: Entrepreneurship and financial literacy will officially enter Grade 6 classrooms in 2027, serving as the inaugural step in an expanded curriculum spanning Grades 6 to 9.
  • Hands-On Learning: Existing initiatives such as the Stock Market Game and school capital market clubs will complement the coursework, giving schoolchildren and youth early, practical experience in investment and enterprise.
  • Emphasis on Financial Ethics: The educational framework will place a strong priority on integrity, teaching young people that generating income must never involve deception or the exploitation of others.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya underscored that building financial literacy must go hand in hand with teaching responsible financial behavior. She emphasized that students must be guided to recognize the importance of ethical decision-making, ensuring that the pursuit of financial success is rooted in integrity and responsibility toward society.
