Sri Lanka Launches Dedicated Motorcycle Lanes to Enhance Road Safety
In a proactive approach towards improving road safety, the Sri Lankan government has announced plans to introduce dedicated motorcycle lanes on major roads across the island. This initiative, aimed at combating the rising number of motorcycle-related accidents, was unveiled by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Bimal Rathnayake.
A Troubling Trend in Road Accidents
The urgency of this initiative stems from alarming statistics that highlight the grave situation of road safety in Sri Lanka. The minister revealed that motorcycle accidents accounted for a significant portion of the approximately 2,500 road fatalities recorded annually, with the death toll particularly rising to around 2,750 in 2025 alone. In the year 2019, nearly 1,400 motorcycle riders and pillion passengers lost their lives, underscoring the need for effective interventions.
Over the years, almost 9,000 individuals have tragically died in motorcycle-related incidents, prompting the government to prioritize motorcycle safety as a critical measure to mitigate road fatalities.
A Pilot Project in Kaluwanchikudy
The pilot phase of this initiative will commence in Kaluwanchikudy, where a designated section of the main road will be allocated specifically for motorcycle use. Highlighting the need for practical solutions, Minister Rathnayake emphasized that unlike conventional lane markings, these dedicated lanes will be physically separated using road barriers. This design recognizes the high volume of motorcycle traffic in urban areas, signaling the government’s commitment to enhancing safety measures.
This move is a significant stride towards making roads safer for all users, especially in regions where motorcycles are a primary mode of transport. By creating a secure space for motorcycle riders, the government aims to reduce congestion and minimize the risks associated with riding alongside larger vehicles.
