Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Sri Lanka
Today, Sri Lanka braces for significant rainfall as the Department of Meteorology has issued a warning of showers and thundershowers, forecasting heavy falls exceeding 75 mm in several regions. Most affected will be the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Northwestern provinces, along with the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara.
The meteorological report indicates that cloudy skies will dominate these areas. Heavy downpours are anticipated particularly in Sabaragamuwa province, as well as in districts such as Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Residents can also expect several spells of showers throughout the North-central province, with additional rainfall predicted in the Uva and Eastern provinces following 2:00 p.m.
Warnings for the Public
In response to the possible adverse weather conditions, officials are urging the public to take necessary precautions. The prediction of strong winds, reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, necessitates caution, especially in the North-central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Central provinces, along with Trincomalee district.
Residents are advised to stay alert to the potential for localized strong winds and lightning strikes that may occur during thundershowers. The maritime community is particularly advised against venturing out to sea due to the high risks of rough conditions, particularly in the southern coastal areas.
Coastal and Marine Conditions
The sea conditions along the coast stretching from Puttalam to Trincomalee, including the routes via Colombo, Galle, Hambantota, and Batticaloa, will experience choppy waters. Wind speeds are estimated to range between 30-40 kmph, potentially soaring to 60-70 kmph at times off the coast from Galle to Pottuvil. Fishermen and naval personnel are thus instructed to exercise utmost caution or avoid these sea areas altogether until conditions improve.
With wave heights projected to increase between 2.0 to 2.5 meters in various coastal regions, the authorities are keen on minimizing hazards associated with heavy rainfall and rough seas. The combination of temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers adds to the urgency of heeding these warnings.
