On September 16, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake outlined ambitious plans to bolster Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Cardiac Care Complex at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. A Revolutionary Cardiac Care Facility

The proposed Cardiac Care Complex, budgeted at Rs. 3,545 million with funding support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is set to transform cardiac care in the region. The eight-storey facility will include state-of-the-art Coronary Care and Intensive Care Units, specialized clinics, and advanced diagnostic labs, ensuring that residents receive top-notch medical care without financial burden.

The President articulated that the construction of this facility is part of a broader strategy to improve overall healthcare service delivery. Notably, he committed to completing the project within 18 months, addressing past delays that have hindered similar initiatives.

Human Resource Development and Financial Investments

The expansion of healthcare facilities is paired with significant investments in human resources, with plans to recruit thousands of new doctors, nurses, and health assistants. Over 6,700 new nursing personnel are expected to join the healthcare system, addressing critical staffing shortages that have plagued the sector.

“This investment is part of our commitment to ensure that free healthcare services are accessible and effective for every Sri Lankan,” Dissanayake declared, emphasizing the correlation between healthcare quality and citizen satisfaction.

Addressing Historical Challenges

Reflecting on Sri Lanka’s past economic turmoil, he acknowledged its effects on healthcare services, where budget constraints and project delays often resulted in inadequate care. He reiterated the government’s objective of responding proactively to these past challenges through strategic investments and better management practices.

As a forward-looking government, Dissanayake’s administration aims not only to enhance healthcare facilities but also to elevate the quality of life for citizens by addressing fundamental needs such as health, education, and transport.

Future Outlook

With plans for additional projects worth Rs. 19 billion scheduled for 2027 and 2028, the government’s health initiatives are poised to reinforce the foundational infrastructure necessary for sustaining a robust healthcare system. As the nation navigates its way out of previous crises, the commitment to a healthier future for all citizens remains a top priority.

President Dissanayake’s vision for a comprehensive overhaul of Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector, characterized by accessibility, modernization, and effective management, signals a promising shift towards better health outcomes for the population.
