Lanka Metro Transit Secures Over Rs. 1 Billion for Expansion

Massive Investment for Urban Transport Enhancement

In a significant step towards revolutionizing public transport in Sri Lanka, the Cabinet of Ministers has sanctioned an impressive Rs. 1.0675 billion for the expansion of Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Limited. This investment aims to bolster its city-wide public transport services and infrastructure.

A Vision for Modern Urban Mobility

Lanka Metro Transit, a recent addition to the Sri Lanka Transport Board, was established in October 2025 with a mission to modernize urban transportation. Currently, the company operates a pilot program featuring ten low-floor buses acquired through the Clean Sri Lanka initiative. Early results have indicated both commercial stability and a favorable response from the public.

Building on this success, Lanka Metro Transit plans to introduce an additional 112 low-floor buses by September 2026. Such growth necessitates an extensive enhancement of the existing transport infrastructure, prompting the recent funding approval.

Infrastructure Development and Operational Support

The approved funding allocation includes Rs. 800 million earmarked for development projects in 2026 and Rs. 267.5 million for operational expenses in 2027. These funds are set to support several critical initiatives, including:

  • Establishment of a fully equipped central workshop in Ekala.
  • Creation of modern bus depots in Thalangama, Kadawatha, Ratmalana, and Homagama.
  • Improvements to internal road systems and bus parking facilities.

The funding proposal, championed by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, is designed to position Lanka Metro Transit for substantial growth, enabling the company to provide reliable modern public transport solutions across the Colombo urban area.

A Sustainable Future Ahead

As urban populations swell and traffic congestion worsens, investing in sustainable public transportation is not just prudent; it’s imperative. The expansion of Lanka Metro Transit signals a commitment to enhancing urban mobility while reducing the environmental footprint of transport. This initiative not only reflects a proactive approach to modernizing Sri Lanka’s transport infrastructure but also addresses the pressing need for effective public transit solutions.

This governmental move towards comprehensive urban transit modernization demonstrates a clear vision for the future, ensuring that Sri Lankans can enjoy an efficient and accessible public transport system that meets the needs of a growing population.
