Kandy Esala Perahera: Police Prepare for Major Traffic Control
Beginning tomorrow, the Sri Lanka Police will implement a comprehensive traffic and security plan in anticipation of the much-anticipated Kandy Esala Perahera, an annual festival celebrated with fervor. Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler shared details about the arrangements, which aim to ensure the safety and enjoyment of thousands of revelers expected in Kandy.
The Kumbal Perahera at the Sri Dalada Maligawa will commence on August 18 and run through August 22, followed by the Randoli Perahera, which will take place from August 23 to 27. Over 8,000 personnel will be deployed, comprising 6,200 police officers, 564 Special Task Force members, and 1,200 tri-forces personnel, alongside 29 members of the Civil Security Department. Canine units will also assist in heightened security measures.

To effectively manage the crowds and ensure safety, the police outline a multi-faceted approach that includes traffic control, security checks, vehicle inspections, and guidance for tourists. Police will establish roadblocks at 14 entry points into Kandy to control access, while designated parking areas will cater to visitors. Thirteen parking locations have been earmarked, with options for both light and heavy vehicles to facilitate seamless access to the festivities.

Drivers planning to attend the Perahera are encouraged to heed the advised alternative routes to ease congestion:
- From Katugastota to Colombo/Nuwara Eliya: Use Gohagoda Road near the Katugastota Bridge.
- From Colombo via Kandy to Kurunegala/Matale: Utilize the Peradeniya–Gohagoda Road.
- From Kandy to Mahiyanganaya/Badulla: Use Dharmashoka Mawatha near the Mahaiyawa Tunnel.
