Indictments Served on Former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and Eight Officers Over Weligama Shooting

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon and eight other police officers were formally served indictments before the Matara High Court in connection with a fatal shooting incident that occurred at a hotel in Weligama in December 2023.

The indictments, filed by the Attorney General, were read out to the nine accused when the case was called before Matara High Court Judge Nandana Amarasinghe. Following the formal serving of the charges, the High Court ordered that all nine accused individuals be released on bail.

The case arises from an operation conducted in Weligama in late December 2023 by a team of eight police officers attached to the Colombo Crime Division (CCD). During the incident, a Police Sergeant belonging to the CCD team died after being shot by officers attached to the Weligama Police. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been conducting investigations into the fatal encounter.
