New Electric Railway Project Set to Elevate Colombo’s Public Transport
Sri Lankan authorities are gearing up to transform urban commutes with the introduction of a new electric railway project in Colombo, slated to commence next year. Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Ruwan Senarath, recently announced that the groundwork for this initiative is already in place, promising a more efficient and modern solution for daily commuters.
Enhancing Connectivity
The proposed railway will start its journey from Maradana, facilitating a seamless transit experience for passengers traveling to Colombo from the southern provinces. One significant feature of the project is its integration with the Ruhunu Kumari service, allowing travelers from Matara to disembark at Panadura and continue their journey to the capital via electric train. “We are preparing that plan and will begin the project by next year,” Senarath confirmed, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing public transport facilities.

The Deputy Minister also addressed several long-stalled infrastructure endeavors, stating that the construction of the Central Expressway is back on track. Projects like the Kurunegala-Galagedara Expressway, with a projected investment of Rs. 112 billion, are also set to resume, as the government shifts its focus to speed up construction activities this year.

Responding to critiques regarding the government’s pace of development, Senarath reiterated the ongoing work in transport and infrastructure as significant contributions towards national progress. “Aren’t these projects work too? They are work,” he asserted, highlighting the government’s proactive stance on public transport revitalization.
