Clarification from Sail Lanka Amid Allegations of Illegal Alcohol Distribution
In a swift response to recent allegations, Sail Lanka Charter Private Limited (SLC) has emphatically denied any wrongdoing related to a yacht party held on August 15 at Colombo Port City. The event in question has come under scrutiny following a series of raids by the Excise Department, targeting claims of unlawful alcohol sales and transportation.
The Excise Department executed raids at three locations within the Port City where they alleged illegal liquor activities were taking place. One of these raids reportedly focused on a luxury yacht accused of hosting parties while in possession of alcohol, which had not been legally authorized under current Sri Lankan laws. As a result of the operations, one suspect was arrested, and significant quantities of alcohol were seized.
Event Hosting Under Third-Party Management
In its official clarification, SLC asserted that it was not involved in the organization or execution of the party, nor in the procurement or distribution of beverages at the event. They clarified that their role was limited to providing charter services for the yacht. “All responsibilities pertaining to the event, including the provision and handling of beverages, were the sole purview of the event organizer,” SLC stated.
Moreover, the company underscored its commitment to adhering to Sri Lankan laws, emphasizing compliance across all operations, particularly in Colombo Port City and other popular locales like Mirissa, Trincomalee, and Pasikuda.
Excise Department Takes Action
During the enforcement actions, the Excise officials not only apprehended one suspect onboard the yacht but also targeted a restaurant alleged to be selling liquor without the requisite permits. Another establishment reportedly possessed an excess quantity of alcohol beyond its licensing capacity, which was restricted to beer.
The Excise Department has since called upon the public to report establishments that might be flouting liquor licensing laws, highlighting the detrimental impact of such violations on government tax revenues.
Public Urged to Avoid Misinformation
SLC has requested the public and media outlets to refrain from disseminating unverified information that might incorrectly implicate the company or its personnel in the alleged illegal activities. They reiterated that their usual operations and services remain unaffected amidst these allegations.
As the situation develops, the legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are expected to unfold in the Fort Magistrate’s Court, marking a critical moment in the enforcement of liquor regulations within Sri Lanka.
