Sri Lanka to Build 10 Modern Chemical-Free Fruit Ripening Chambers

The Institute of Post Harvest Technology Management has announced plans to construct 10 modern fruit-ripening chambers this year to support large-scale fruit producers across Sri Lanka. The initiative forms part of a systematic national effort to eliminate the use of harmful chemical substances in artificial ripening and promote modern, scientifically recognized agricultural practices.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, the facilities are designed to transition the industry away from traditional ripening practices toward natural, scientific methodologies. Professor Rohitha Prashantha, Chairman of the Institute of Post Harvest Technology Management, confirmed that commercial enterprises will receive the necessary technology and technical training to adopt these advanced methods, ensuring the domestic market is supplied with safe, high-quality produce.

Key Developments

  • The Institute of Post Harvest Technology Management will establish 10 modern ripening chambers for large-scale producers within the year.
  • Commercial businesses are to be provided with technical training and technology transfers to implement scientific, non-toxic ripening techniques.
  • The rollout coincides with the launch of the national “Poison-Free Fruits for Children” initiative at the Ministry Auditorium.
  • The broader programme aims to mitigate public health hazards associated with artificial, chemical-based ripening agents.

The strategic push was reinforced by the launch of the “Poison-Free Fruits for Children” national programme on Thursday, held in observance of World Children’s Day. Inaugurated under the patronage of Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe, the campaign focuses on safeguarding public health—with a strong emphasis on protecting children—by expanding consumer access to fruits meeting verified safety standards.
