Sri Lanka to Provide New Javelin Set for World Champion Rumesh Tharanga
In an inspiring twist to an otherwise bittersweet homecoming, Sri Lanka’s Sports Ministry has stepped up to support world-renowned javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga with a new set of javelins. The athlete returned to a hero’s welcome at the Bandaranaike International Airport on September 15, 2026, following his triumphant victories in the men’s javelin throw at both the Diamond League Athletics Championship and the World Ultimate Athletics Championship.

A Historic Homecoming
Tharanga’s return was celebrated by a large crowd, eager to honor one of the greatest achievements in the history of Sri Lankan athletics. The celebrated athlete has made headlines this year for his unmatched performance, including a jaw-dropping throw of 92.62 meters— the best recorded by any male athlete in 2026 during the Rome leg of the Diamond League series.
Damage During Transit
However, the celebrations were marred by a significant setback. Upon his arrival, it was discovered that all five javelins used by Tharanga during his record-breaking season had been damaged during transit, the cause of which remains under investigation.
Expressing both pride and disappointment, Tharanga conveyed his feelings to the media: “Unfortunately, all five of the javelins with which I recorded throws beyond 92 meters were damaged during transit due to what appears to have been an oversight involving the aircraft. While I cannot say I left the airport entirely overjoyed, I am extremely proud to have brought home these two trophies for Sri Lanka.”
Swift Government Response
In light of this unfortunate incident, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage quickly took action, assuring that the Ministry of Sports would provide Tharanga with a brand-new set of javelins. In a statement, the Minister affirmed that immediate steps would be taken to ensure that the star athlete receives replacement equipment without delay, so that his training program can continue without interruption.
Looking Ahead
Tharanga’s resolve remains strong, as he aims to build upon his recent successes and maintain his status as one of the world’s top athletes. With the government’s prompt support, it is expected that he will be back in top form, ready to challenge records and inspire the next generation of athletes in Sri Lanka.
