Visa Policy Changes Amid Security Concerns

Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath announced at a Cabinet media briefing that Thailand’s decision to revise visa concessions was prompted by concerns over the misuse of visa privileges. Various incidents involving Sri Lankan nationals engaging in illegal activities, including drug offenses, have been flagged as primary reasons for this policy shift. Reports detailing these illicit actions have alarmed Thai officials, leading them to reassess visa provisions for Sri Lanka along with 59 other countries.

Minister Herath emphasized the necessity of maintaining robust bilateral relations while addressing security concerns that arise from the misuse of existing arrangements. This proactive approach aims to mitigate future issues and re-establish trust between both nations.

Ongoing Bilateral Discussions

In light of these developments, the Sri Lankan government has initiated talks with Thai officials to negotiate a separate bilateral visa agreement. The proposal aims to re-establish visa facilitation conditions that cater specifically to Sri Lankan travelers, thus preserving travel opportunities while adhering to security protocols.

During discussions, observations and suggestions from Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration have already been incorporated into the draft agreement. This draft is now under review by the Attorney General’s Department for finalization, highlighting the government’s commitment to swiftly addressing the situation.

Aims for Future Collaboration

Minister Herath remains optimistic about finalizing the bilateral agreement soon, which would allow Sri Lankan nationals to continue enjoying preferential visa arrangements. In addition, the Minister is scheduled to visit Thailand on September 14 for discussions related to a separate labor agreement, which also opens avenues for enhancing cooperation between the two countries.

This initiative not only aims to ease the travel of Sri Lankans to Thailand but also reinforces the importance of diplomatic dialogue in mitigating the complexities arising from security issues. The outcome of this negotiation will be critically observed, as it sets a precedent for how countries navigate visa privileges amidst rising global security concerns.
