Three New Expressways on the Horizon

The government aims to kick-start construction on expressways linking Galagedara to Rambukkana, Ingiriya to Padukka, and Kurunegala to Galewela next year. President Dissanayake described this initiative as a turning point that reflects the government’s dedication to funding infrastructure projects through local resources, thus enhancing national sovereignty over financial obligations.

Railway Electrification and Renewable Energy Initiatives

Complementing the new expressways, Dissanayake also emphasized a Rs. 60 billion railway electrification program aimed at upgrading key lines in the country. Tenders for this vital initiative are expected to be awarded in November, with a significant budget allocation set for next year.

On the renewable energy front, the government is installing a 160-megawatt battery storage system to harness solar power for peak demands, accentuating a shift towards sustainable energy practices. This comes as plans for a supplementary 200-megawatt system are underway, reflecting a progressive stance on energy management.

Further Investment in Digital Infrastructure

Digital transformation is also a priority, with plans to establish 1,000 4G towers nationwide, enabling access to essential government services from the comfort of home. A budget of Rs. 30 billion has been earmarked for digitalization initiatives aimed at streamlining citizen engagement with their government.

Rural Development and Vocational Education

In a bid to enhance rural infrastructure, President Dissanayake revealed an allocation of Rs. 25 billion for road improvements, despite recent supply challenges. Additionally, the establishment of 50 vocational universities across Sri Lanka seeks to provide alternative educational pathways for youth following their Advanced Level examinations, addressing the country’s evolving educational needs.

A Commitment to Social Welfare

President Dissanayake did not overlook social welfare, stating that Rs. 6,000 would be provided to 1.7 million schoolchildren to support their educational needs, alongside financial packages aimed at aiding those in state care. These initiatives reflect a shift towards a more equitable social framework in Sri Lanka.

Looking Towards the Future

With these ambitious projects, President Dissanayake aims not only to bolster infrastructure but also to enhance overall governance while reducing dependence on foreign borrowing. As Sri Lanka navigates this new trajectory, the government’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive development will be key to its success.
