Fleet Growth and Infrastructure Investment

In a focused effort to bolster public transport, the Minister revealed plans to immediately increase the fleet size to 122 buses by the end of this month, with an additional 50 buses pending approval. This expansion is set to elevate the total number of operational buses to 172 by year-end or early next year, significantly improving service coverage and frequency.

Further collaboration with the private sector is also on the horizon, as opportunities are being created for private operators to engage in partnerships and agreements with the Metro company, thereby diversifying service options for commuters.

Modernizing Urban Transport Infrastructure

The ongoing initiative to modernize the urban transport infrastructure is a joint venture between various governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Transport, the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, and the Sri Lanka Transport Board, alongside Lanka Metro Transit (Pvt) Ltd. The first phase of enhancing the Metro Bus Service’s operational, maintenance, and administrative functions has seen the establishment of four new depot facilities in strategic locations including Talangama, Kadawatha, Ekala, and Ratmalana.

Expanded Routes and Enhanced Connectivity

Currently, the Metro Bus Route No. 01 operates from Makumbura to Kadawatha, traversing key areas such as Maharagama. To further support this route, 15 new Metro buses are being deployed, along with plans for improved connectivity through dedicated bus stops, integrated payment systems, and additional parking facilities.

Reinforcement of SLTB Operations

Emphasizing the critical role of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) in public transportation, Minister Rathnayake noted arrangements are being made to import 600 new air-conditioned buses by the year’s end. An additional procurement of 200 buses is also anticipated, funded through SLTB resources, which will enhance the overall quality and efficiency of public transport across the country.

This initiative not only promises to streamline urban commuting but also indicates a progressive movement towards sustainable transport solutions in Sri Lanka, targeting improved accessibility for all citizens.
